Do a search of your Mac for the file name, you may have mistakenly saved it to another location.

Did all that. No file was created. No background tasks active.

If it doesn't appear and you can't find it by searching, it's possible (as FCPX.guru said) it's stored somewhere else and the Spotlight indexes are out of date so a search does not find it. You can rebuild Spotlight indexes using this procedure: support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716

Make sure you have plenty of free disk space. The fact the source is a 72GB file implies the intermediate render files could be larger than this. If background rendering is enabled, total render file size could be multiples of this size.
Try this export: File>Share>Master File>Settings, Format: Computer, Video Codec: H.264 Faster Encode, Resolution: 1920x1080 (or as preferred).
If you can upgrade to FCPX 10.4.8, there were some significant performance improvements over 10.4 (if that's what you're running).
If making several export attempts this will be expedited by pre-rendering the timeline. First disable background rendering: FCPX Preferences>Playback>Background Rendering (clear checkbox). Then delete all current render files: Files>Delete Generated Library Files>>Delete Render files>All.
Then restart FCPX, select all clips in the timeline with CMD+A, then render them with CTRL+R. If that completes then export using the above settings. If it hangs or crashes, post the specifics. Segregating the render phase vs the export phase helps isolate the problem area.
