MacPro G5 (Power PC) - what is it good for? was created by pszilard
I was given a Mac Pro G5 (pre Intel) power pc model. It is in perfect condition, dual core/cpu, with 6.5GB ram and 250GB HDD and has been sanitised of data, but has full licenses for Final Cut 5, and a bunch of other stuff. All seems to be working.
My question is "Does the G5, have any use in today's world, and does it have any commercial value"? Should I keep it (Why?) or try to sell it on eBay (for how much?)
It has licensed Adobe CS2 apps, Microsoft Office, and more. Has dual DVI video card and wired keyboard.
I have printed to PDF a 125 page System report, which lists all its guts and s/w - if anyone is interested.

As far as it being useful, we have a couple of these that serve strictly as media conversion systems since they include firewire ports (useful for BetaCam, VHS, 8mm , etc, transfers) when we don't want to tie up our main Mac Pro system. We also just bought a used iMac (a bit newer but not by much) for the same purpose. For larger quantity conversions we use those (3) machines along with our Mac Pro and BMD Intensity Pro 4K card to capture (4) tapes at a time. The G5 is commonly available on eBay for anywhere between $200 and $500. Be sure to change the battery before it leaks!
