Chaging Default Still Image Duration?

No, click it once, hit E or Q or W, done.

Well that's the thing. If I select the list item and hit E/Q/W, I get 10 seconds of the still in the timeline. I only want 4, which is why I set the preference. But for some reason I need to select the list item, then click on the image preview above the list, and then hit the shortcut in order to get the preferred duration in the timeline. It's not a show-stopper, just annoying. Unless I'm missing something (entirely possible)...
EDIT: The above assumes list view. I don't typically use filmstrip view unless I'm scrubbing for shots on longer clips.
