Naming Convention for Files and Folders delivery

Hey guys,

I am actually debating to upgrade our naming convention to gibe clients a better understanding.

Inside FCPX we use
Project Name 1 - Type - 16x9 - Edit 1 which then reflects on the export:
Great Video 1 - Teaser - 16x9 - Edit 4 - ProRes.mov
Great Video 1 - Spot - 16x9 - Edit 2 - h264.mov

The folder would be Date and Project name:
Great Video 1 - 2020-01-18 - Delivery
How do you deliver to the customer, adding codec and resolution for example?

I never put codec or resolution into the file name. That's easy enough to find out. We focus on the scene and shot as traditionally done, to help the editor, not the client. If you deliver the clips to the client, you're not responsible for anything more than that. "Great Video" is a subjective term and tells me nothing other than you have an opinion about what you shot for me. I'd name my folders by camera name, date shot, location shot. But I have not delivered raw footage to a client in many, many years.

Ahhh naming convention and organisation... my favourite subject.

@FCPX.guru I think he meant with Great video as an example for the Project Name that he wrote above.

Anyways.
We kinda adopted over the years to online delivery and plus added some of our own flavour.

For all our stored delivery we use a client Alias and Unique ID... then the project name, content type, language, resolution and codec. It would look like this.
FCP-20_1234-ProjectName-Full-EN-1920x1080-ProRes.mov
FCP-20_1234-ProjectName-Spot-EN-1080x1080-h264.mov
FCP-20_1234-ProjectName-Spot-ES-1080x1080-h264.mov
FCP-20_1234-ProjectName-Teaser-EN-1920x1080-ProRes.mov
FCP-20_1234-ProjectName-Teaser-EN-1920x1080-h264.mov
FCP-20_5678-ProjectName-Full-EN-1920x1080-ProRes.mov
FCP-20_5678-ProjectName-Full-ES-1920x1080-ProRes.mov
FCP-20_5678-ProjectName-Full-FR-1920x1080-ProRes.mov

We did had the discussion to replace the resolution with the aspect ratio. and also add the length of the video in the name.

Wow we have two responses from 19753 users here!

@FCPX.guru was an example of the file name no meaning behind it. Sorry if my explanation wasn't as easy for you.
@Scrubelicious I really like your example. Here we really don't have any Client Alias just Project Work order numbers.

Maybe we will get some more feedback from other users.

So use the work order number in place of the project name.

We use something very similar to Scrubelicious above, however we insert the date of the file after the client name. In some cases, where the client has a special project name or ID, this is the first in the naming convention. We also abbreviate the codec for our reference. Our clients sometimes know what what it means and generally don't care. Honestly, we haven't been consistent with this over the years and it is usually more useful to clients than it is to us since all of our digital client folders are organized with Master files and Deliverables. We just need to make sure we know who it was for and when it was created.

Examples:

COMPANY_1-27-20_ProjectName_Master-1920x1080-PR422HQ.mov
COMPANY_1-27-20_ProjectName_Web-1920x1080-H.264.mov

Below applies when clients provide a designated project code for us to use:
PR61850-155-394_COMPANY_1-27-20_Master_1920x1080-PR422HQ.mov

Creating history....one edit at a time !

You basically just rewrote what FCPX.guru wrote.
I didn’t mean how I the editor would receive the footage we have log sheets for that. It’s more about the delivery to the client.
