Housekeepings LUTS in your projects

Hi, happy holidays everyone. Long time no see ;) A couple of years ago I started using LUT utility from Color Grading Central Central (CGC) to apply LUTS in my projects. Since 10.4 FCPX supports this by default by adding Custom LUT in the tool, making CGC obsolete.

I want to upgrade my projects to use the Custom LUT default supported by FCPX instead of CGC, so I can remove CGC and manage LUTS the new way. I think this means opening each project that uses the LUT utility, and replace that effect with the Custom LUT effect including the selected LUT.

This is extra effort when migrating from CGC to FCPX, but in the end I think this makes housekeeping LUST and plugins easier. Do you agree or did I miss something or do you have another workflow? Would like to hear your feedback.

It makes the camera LUTs obsolete. These are the LUTs applied to be the initial correction based on camera make/model and encoding (LOG, etc).

It does not make style LUTs obsolete. These are the LUTs applied as part of your color correction phase to achieve a stylized look.

It depends on which you're trying to use. If you're using Lut Utility for creating a stylized look, to mimic some iconic film look, then stay with LUT Utility.

Personally, I'd not get rid of LUT Utility just yet. And I'd not change an existing project if you have it looking the way you want. Switching from applying a LUT in one place to applying it in another is not going to really change anything, and if it does, it will because it created a nightmare to fix. Don't fix what isn't broken, don't create unnecessary work for yourself.

It took me a while to find out you have two LUTs in FCPX. The camera LUT is applied in the metadata of a clip, where the custom LUT is applied to the clip as an effect. :woohoo:
