I connected a Rode Podcaster through USB to my iMac (late 2015, Catalina). When recording voice-over I see the input bar move with the level of the mic-audio but there is nothing in the recorded files.

My iMac is connected to a Denon amplifier (optical cable) but I can't get any sound from the mic to the amplifier. Also after disconnecting the optical cable there is no sound from the mic on the iMac. Monitoring is 'on'.

Any ideas what is going wrong?
