Has anyone found a way of getting the audio from the frame under the skimmer to loop repeatedly while skimming? This really useful facility was added to our first NLE - an iMMIX TurboCube - back around 1995 so it's hardly new science! Being able to hear syllables when editing audio really speeds the process.

Off the cuff I’d say that’s not possible. Skimming is like scrubbing in so far as the playback position is determined by moving the mouse. Looping means playing and repeating a certain region. You can of course clip-skim the audio, then click and hit “>” (after cmd+L of course, german keyboard). But if I don’t err, the playback will not be solo anymore. If that’s what you mean, I understand your request. It would be a nice feature to be able to clip-skim and hear/see a solo-ed clip after hitting L or space ...

Axel answered part of this. You can use loop mode (CMD+L), select the clip, press / to start loop playback, then press L several times to speed it up, K to stop, J to slow down or reverse. Technically it is not the "skimmer", but it will essentially skim the clip at high speed in a loop while playing audio - either forward or reverse.

I find the audio waveforms clear enough that I don't need to loop over and over. I can listen once, maybe twice, and I can see clearly where words and syllables are. Interesting idea, though.

Skimming in general is just a way to quickly navigate. The only way to THEN start realtime playback from any given position is for the whole timeline/stack of clips. And unfortunately that doesn't work with the clip skimmer. Wouldn't it be nice to point to an audio clip (activating the non-realtime clip skimmer) and thereby soloing it for all other playback commands?
