Do not get less than 16GB RAM for video editing. 8 will frustrate you to death.

Welcome to fop.co, Richard
I'm not shy to repeat: editing my home&school stuff on an antique 2012MacMini + handful of SSDs (int and usb3 ext) - easy.
Larry Jordan recommends in one of his latest articles 16-32 GB RAM … but not more. And, to drench the final bit of speed, an i7 processor.
Depends very much of your source materials format, 1080AVCHD? 4kproResRaw? Complexity of projects, 3min FaceBook? 120min Hollywood? Consider to use proxies …
Don't forget to add tons of media-storage 'drives', handy TB-connected SSDs, or huge Raids. Finally: backups?
Check the nearest AppleStore, wether a 15" laptop screen is big enough for your needs … (or add a monitor to your shopping list)

I'd say, from personal experience, the adequacy of a 15" screen is more often determined by the age of the editor. HA! I could no way use one (eyes not what they used to be in my late 50's), so I have mine at work plugged into a 27" Apple display. And yes, i7 will squeeze a little bit more power out. And with a laptop (never the most powerful machines around) you want every drop of power you can squeeze out of it.
Similar to Karsten, I often use a late 2013 rMBP 15" at work. Runs just fine, plugged into an awesome RIAD. mO2 can get slow at times, but not too slow to edit efficiently with. Although the iMac Pro at home smokes it, the point is old Macs still have tons of life left in them. So beef it up at the time of purchase, get a very long life span out of it. "Mo money fo yo money!" (anyone remember that?)
