I have found on here, thank fully that I need a faster drive for edits.
If I purchase a new drive they will all be either USB 3 or Thunderbolt 3.
Does this mean I cannot connect such a new SSD to my 2015 Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt 2 socket?

You should have a USB3 port on your MBP and a TB3 drive will work with an adapter cable (to TB2 or USB3). It probably makes sense for you to decide which port you want to use and order the appropriate drive with the appropriate cable at the same time.
