Time line keeps changing by itself. was created by Whokuni
Sorry for the constant posts, however, Im still in the process of learning FCP X . This one deals with a constant changing size in the timeline. This is random and automatic. It is extremely annoying when you have to stop editing and resize the size of the timeline. I have included a file to show you what I mean. Is this a fault of FCP X or is there a setting whereby I can prevent this from happening. As I said, it is extremely annoying.
Thank you in advance

Is it? Wasn't aware of that. Does the degree of zooming into the timeline really change without me doing the zooming? Can't imagine that. You must be confusing or misinterpreting something. Perhaps s.o. else knows what you mean and can explain.
On the other hand, I find myself resizing clips in Browser and timeline stretch all the time during editing. The shortcuts for that are of course cmd + or cmd- and shift z. Do you have a Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad?
Then I'd like to share a personal experience. I once bought an Apple trackpad for FCS - that was before I became used to iPhones. And I decided that gestures were not right for me. I use the mouse (an ordinary Logitech scrollwheel mouse) and do most things with the keyboard.
However, two weeks ago a friend gave me a Magic Mouse 2. I wasn't overly impressed, but iI thought, why not give it another try? With the help of Bettertouchtool I programmed the following simple gestures to specifically work in FCP:
1. Touching the upper top equals shift z (you never touch the top accidentally because it's slightly curved downwards).
2. Pinch in (2 fingers) zooms out of Browser or Timeline (depending on the window the cursor is in).
3. Pinch out zooms in (like on an iPhone).
4. Placing one finger on the surface and then touching with a second finger left sets an In-point.
5. One finger and tap on it's right sets an Out-Point.
6. Tapping with two fingers favorites the selection.
So far it's only just fun. It works flawlessly. I don't know yet if i ever will take this a step further and assign gestures to q,w,e.
Paritcularly the pinching gestures are definitely worth it. As I understood, there are other, completely free mapping softwares aside from Bettertouchtool (which has a 45 day trial and then costs $ 7,50).

I've used the Magic Trackpad since it was first released, and will never go back to a mouth. I do not use BetterTouchTool, though I played with it once. Love it!
And yes, zooms and resizing does not happen unless you hit a key or gesture for it to do so.
These are really basic questions, and I'd highly recommend the Ripple Training FCPX tutorial. Will save you time and headaches down the road, and get you up and running quicker.

Thank you both for your input. I have been using a magic mouse and now after reading something over at OSXDaily I think I have been accidently hitting the trackpad at times which maybe the cause of my problems.

I am not in the habit of using the trackpad as probably the rest of you are so I have diabled the trackpad and will see how it goes. Yes FCPX.guru, I will do, as you suggest, and get my hands on the Ripple Training FCPX tutorial. Although it wont be until I have finished my current project and got a few hours to spare.
Thank you to the both of you

As for training, do 15-20 minutes a day. Don't cram it all into "hours" in one day. You retain learning more in small chunks. And it doesn't interfere with your current work.

Thank you for this advice. I have to add that I have been using FCP X for several years now. Right from the old versions. I have also done several rather long projects (long in terms of 29min documentaries) I have done a basic tutorial years ago but with the software often upgrading I figure there are still plenty of things that I could re-learn. You mention the "Ripple Training FCPX tutorial". Is this really the best available? What about Lydna or some of the others? Is there something a little better than the really basics available. Or do you think I could really do with a re-learn from the very, very start?
PS I am using a Japanese FCP X which maybe one of the reasons for my stupidness
Thanking you once again

Ripple is the best around, period. And they cover basics and advanced topics. I recommend only because your questions are very basic usage questions. I'm an Apple certified master trainer, been since 2006. I was a trainer for many other enterprise level custom software app developers before that. From all those years of experience, how long you've used an app does not necessarily translate into how well you know it. I don't know you personally, I can only generalize, but I've seen many long-time professional users of various apps who had spent those years not being efficient or not knowing many basics, mostly self-taught. Again, that's a broad generalization based on real-world teaching across the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Most experienced users still have a lot to learn. I've been publicly and privately teaching FCP since version 3 and I still learn new things all the time.

thank you fr this explanation. I shall take heed and do some re-training at the pace you suggested in an earlier post.
Once again, thank you for this extremely useful and in-depth advice.
