All,

It was the subject of quite a long Twitter conversation yesterday, the news that Bunim Murray was moving away from FCP to Avid.

Press Release Reality TV Leader, Bunim/Murray Productions, Selects Avid's Professional Editing and Storage Solutions

Must have hurt Apple yesterday as Bunim Murray were their poster child in the early days of trying to get professional interest in FCP.

Don't know if these are new seats are new or will replace FCP.

Another factor here is that broadcast TV is not the majority of the market as it was back when Apple used these guys as a poster child. They are in fact part of the industries minority now. The industry has and is still radically changing, the market is sub-divided up much more than ever before, and traditional broadcast is having troubles keeping up with the changes. Look at how much Indie films are impacting Hollywood's bottom line. So yes, they can move to any platform they want, but most of us have production needs that do not resemble those of a reality (the cheapest form of smut imho) television any more.

There's a larger market for FCP X, and it's not cable broadcast at the moment. Apple can sell many FCP X licenses and be strong without ever touching traditional broadcast.

Peter I saw you @ replies yesterday and I agree editing would be faster in FCPX, but I do think shared storage is something that needs to be worked out. I haven't had to use shared storage in 4 years and even then it was mainly used for effects that were used across a whole season. I still copied the media to a locally attached drive.

Actually, I have many consulting clients who are running Final Cut Server / XSAN systems, and shared storage is vital to their operations. They are all sticking with Final Cut Server until they are forced to change due to hardware issues. I still don't understand Apple dropping it except that it's not compatible with FCP X, and that FCP X runs on top of the old FCSvr database engine. Which opens up a whole universe of opportunity for Apple to incorporate FCSvr type central network storage within the app.

But again, the majority of the industry is not using shared storage. And CatDV has been very, very aggressive in going after the FCSvr market, even developing a conversion utility to move a FCSvr database to a CatDV database, and supports the new FCPXML.

I think two things are happening simultaneously. First, Apple is narrowing it's market focus, for sure. Second, the media production market is drastically changing. It just happens that the two are taking place at the same time, and perhaps Apple is taking advantage of that. But I don't think you can say "Apple is not as full featured professional as it used to be" without also saying "the media production market is not as old school traditional as it used to be" in the same breath. Too many people try to separate them out, and you just can't. IMHO.

@BenB do you think apple will ever add a FCSvr type functionality to FCPX. I think if it was reasonably priced my small shop could benefit from it, even for simple stuff like editing a wedding. 1 editor could be working on the ceremony while another editor is working on reception stuff.

Considering the stripped own FCSvr database it already sits on, I can only assume something is coming eventually. Just no clue when. And it's just an assumption.

You saying that could just also means Apple target are not the professional market but the consumer.
Which you are 100% right it is a miniority compared to the consumer market. If its true that Apple wants to keep the pro line running MacBook Pro and Mac Pro then they need to figure something out soon to keep them in the high roller market. A good PC with the complete Adobe CS is pretty tasty these days.

Back to the top, we are hopping on our side that Editshare might have something for us to use with FCPX. We sure not going to hold our breath on Apple to have a shared storage solution this year. Or it's going to be Adobe. :pinch:

CatDV is aggressively pursuing the FCP legacy/X market.

Thought this was rather ironic. Thanks Nivardo

I remember the release of that video, I think it was for Final Cut Studio 2, which I think was the last NAB Apple attended, and when Motion 3 finally got the ability to have a 3D camera. This was a huge release for Apple.
