Should my external HDD via Thunderbolt 2 be Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS?

I agree with Tom if your external drive is of the spinning variety. No advantage in using APFS and some lingering issues in using HDDs with APFS.
On the other hand, I use SSDs for my external drives for editing and I have now switched to formatting as APFS. APFS has numerous advantages for solid state, and flash based drives.
Mostly I only use HDDs for archiving and back-ups.
Just my 2 cents…
Hope this Helps, Greg

Awesome! Makes perfect sense. I might have to look into a SSD for my editing and use my current HDD as another form of backup maybe.
My big thing for wanting to switch to APFS is for the duplicating filed without taking up extra space feature. But I’ll keep my current external hdd the way it is. Thanks for the input and explanation!
