How to Transform a Clip without Moving the Crop was created by Xigwon
Hello!
[SEE BELOW — I EDITED MY POST BECAUSE THE FCP.CO ISN'T LETTING ME ACTUALLY RESPOND]
I have a clip that is cropped to the upper-right corner of the screen (using the "Trim" option).
How do I transform the clip but keep the trim in the same space? Like I want to nudge the image over, but keep the crop in the same spot, so that I don't have to keep moving it back over and over again?
(I don't know what this is called, but it'd be like the equivalent of a "slip edit"—except with space instead of time)
—————
I have a video of my face. It is cropped so that it fits in a little black square in the top right corner of the screen. The edges of the cropped video itself fit perfectly in the square. But I realize that my face is off-center in the square—it's slightly too far to the right.
If I try to fix it by transforming the clip to the left, then the left edge will bleed past the left side of the square, and there is now a gap between the right edge of the clip and the right side of the square. So now I have to turn on the trim tool, zoom way in, and move the edges back to fit with the square.
I want to know if it's possible to move the image without moving its edges—without moving the position on the screen that it's going to be cropped to. This is very easy with images in Pages. You hit "Edit Mask," then double click and you can move the image around but keep the mask in the same spot.
Any ideas?
(A slip edit is when you move the time-position of the CONTENT without moving the EDGES of the clip. I want to do the exact same thing with space instead of time. I want to move the CONTENT of the image but keep its EDGES in the same spot).

Really not quite understand what you are trying to do. However, it sounds as if a compound (alt + g) was a solution. Basically "downmixing" all spatial changes so that they stay untouched by additional changes to the compound clip.

stack your full-screen/background clip upon your headshot clip
apply a Mask onto it, invert Mask => 'punches a hole'
transform/zoom/position your head-clip to your needs....

Well, I have ten of these clips arranged in a grid, and I need to adjust all of them individually. So there isn't really any "background" clip that is going to lay over this one.
Any ideas?

… then follow Axel's advice, creating a compound per 'box' …

Unfortunately, that doesn't work. Take a look at this attachment. Imagine that these are 10 pictures (not videos). As you can see, in the "The Problem," the top central one is too far to the left.
If I try to move it over, obviously the border moves with the picture, giving me a white bar on the left and having the picture bleed over to the right. To fix that, obviously I just select the Trim tool and move the picture back over. But that takes two steps.
What I need is a one-step way to move any of those pictures over, while keeping its border in the same physical location on the screen. To me this seems like one of the most basic functionalities, but I could be wrong.

If the original photo cuts off there, there' nothing you can do about that.
I'd compound clip these, adjust as needed. There's no magic wand for such work.

What's the point of compound clipping them together? How would that make this issue any easier? (genuine question)

If you need to move things around, make a template (generator) in Motion. You can publish the x/y pan and scale parameters for each drop zone.
