Optimized Media looks off

I am using a Sony PXW-Z150 camera set to record 1920x1080/50p BT.2020 (Using PP10)
and editing using Final Cut Pro 10.4.4. on a Mac Pro 2013 using a 30 inch cinema display with all the footage using Color Space Override Rec. 2020

when I edit the footage without transcoding it everything looks fine but once FCPX creates multicam clips the colours look off and no amount of colour correction helps. the only thing I can do is delete rendered media and edit without optimized media.

is there a setting I'm over looking?

many thanks.

In FCPX preferences under playback there is a setting which forces FCPX to optimize the media for multi-cam clips. I think this is on by default and every-time preferences are deleted. You can turn this off, however the performance on your system may suffer if those clips are not optimized. In the viewer, there is also a setting for better performance and higher quality, although typically when you are looking at a single frame in the viewer, the color still looks pretty close.

I haven't used Rec. 2020 but that workflow requires specific steps as discussed in this Apple white paper: www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Working..._Final_Cut_Pro_X.pdf

What if you import one clip to a test library, view that using no effects or LUTS, then create optimized media and view it? Does it happen consistently anytime with optimized media or only with multicam? What about proxies -- does it happen with those? If you import to a Rec. 709 library, then generate optimized media, also use a Rec. 709 project, does it happen then?

It is isolated to the FCPX viewer or does it persist in rendered output as viewed by Quicktime 10? If so what if that output file is viewed on another system? Make sure you are using Pro Video Formats 2.0.7, in Mojave that is updated via System Preferences>Software Update, before that it's here: support.apple.com/kb/DL1947?locale=en_US

Many thanks for all the help. I think it might me a bug in FCPX as the colours only look strange once final cut pro attempts to make optimized versions of the media so I'll just edit the original footage in the meantime.

I have the same problem. Using HLG footage from Sony. The color space override in FCPX behaves wrong on clips that are optimized or proxies. It only works the right way if the file is in native format.
