Importing XMLs and not duplicating already existing media

Hello,

We are collaborating on an edit using Red footage. We have multiple editors that are working on smaller pieces of the final project. The main editor has all of the footage imported into their library. What we would love to be able to do is; import a new xml of a project (timeline) from one editor, into the main editors library without duplicating any existing footage in the browser. Does anyone know what settings or know the best workflow of achieving this? Do we have to merge events, copy events, import a different kind of xml, open libraries etc?
Thanks!
Adam

I would create an intermediate library to import their XML into. So, now, you have your working library, and an intermediate library with the one default event.

(Assuming all the same footage is already in your main working library:)

1. In your working library, make a new project with the same settings as your main project.
2. Select all the media in your events, and append them to the end of your empty project. (You now have a giant string out of all your footage)
2a. Add a large gap clip at the end to have some separation for the next few steps

3. Go to your new library, and import the XML from your collaborator.
4. Open the project they were wishing to share with you.
5. Select all the content, and copy it.

6. Go back to your giant string out in your main libarary
7. Make sure your playhead is parked at the very end, and paste.

FCPX should recognize that the clips are already in this timeline, and should not make duplicates.
Give it a try and let me know if this works.
