How exactly do I create a custom thumbnail for projects?

I've seen this on tutorial videos, but can't figure out how it works.

Not exactly randomly. There’s a formula the application uses to pick a frame.

I was looking for this question, and FCPX takes the middle project frame to set its thumbnail. It means that if your project is 10 minutes long, thumbnail will be exact the 5 minutes frame.
