Voice over workflow

Hi

I have not done too many videos with voice over before. I have a single file to work from and I need to split it up as per the script. Now I have done the first one in Premiere and I used subclips and named them using the script. Am I correct to assume that the way forward with FCP would be to use compound clips?

I don’t think you need compound clips. The voice over is like any other audio clip; you can mark it up with I/O or favorites or keywords and edit it into the timeline.

Assuming the timing of the voiceover track is locked and there won't be any major adjustments to it, I'd put the VO in the primary storyline of FCPX and just time the other video and audio clips to that. Let the VO set the pacing. If you need more space between certain spoken phrases you'll need to cut ( Command +B ) the VO track in the primary storyline and insert a gap clip which is a minor inconvenience. This is just the way I do it and it works well as the voiceover tells the story and sets the pacing. I can think of no better way to accomplish this in FCPX but I'm definitely open to suggestions.

I do VO work daily in FCPX and find it the best tool for the job. Even if you need the VO as a connected clip, make it a Storyline first. Then EQ and such. THEN cut it up as needed. Don't forget the P (position) tool, which comes in very handy at time. I get voice edits done faster than I ever have. And I've been doing/editing VO work professionally for two decades.

Firstly thank you for your replies.

The voiceover was recorded before time as one single file from the script and the demo was recorded later. I wanted the ability to search via written terms, hence my thought of using compound clips. Take all of your points on board. I want to prove a point to my intermediate client that FCP is faster. We are making changes now in PP and OMG it's killing me not having the magnetic timeline.

I have saved my settings as a preset for my own voice on the mic in my station studio, and one for the mic in my home studio. The other 5 VO actors I work with regular, I have presets for each of them. Depends on the mic and the person's unique voice qualities. But to start, try out various presets in the EQ. For example, my own voice on an old Sennhieser (sp?) mic, I started with Male Vox 2, tweaked that, got exactly what I needed for my voice on that mic.

With my Mojave MA-200 I rarely use a limiter or compressor, but when I do, it is because that unique recording requires it. I use that for my own voice mostly, and with the proximity effect measured out, I don't need to touch the recording with anything most of the time. Then there are off days, too much coffee, too much this or that in my diet, my voice is a little off.

Learn the proximity effect with your voice (or your talent's) and the specific mic you're using.

These are dated, but could be interesting reads. FYI, I never use multiple takes, just one, and cut it up with the magnetic timeline.

That works well and I can search the text too, I changed the name from Favorite to the text from the script. I knew this group would have the answer to my question.

Thank you all

Rob

Philip Hodgetts made a test with already in AppStore available Speedscriber …

Interesting observations… e.g. 99.98% accuracy is, imho, an impressive rate (I grew up with S2T-systems you had to teach by hours of reading out fairytales…), and a big help with a +8000 words text.

Same on my phone - have to admit, the google.app is much smarter understanding my babble-mumble than Siri. Where both systems get desperate: me talking English LOL!!

Still in my personal 'beta': macOS build-in S2T feature… always a marvel, watching a machine typing my spoken text :silly:

… for sure, the above mentioned specialized systems do much more, tagging transcripts to ranges… impressive technology.
