Using Encrypted Disk was created by Bammers
I am using MyBook Thunderbolt Duo - MAC OS Extended (Journaled) External 4TB Drives for my media.
I was considering encrypting the drive using Apple FileVault.
But - does anyone know the possible performance hit when editing in FCPX using encrypted drives??
Cheers,'Garry

MAJOR performance hit! Basically, you can NOT edit on a File Vault encrypted drive. Well, technically you "can" but you won't like it very much.

What is your goal for using an encrypted drive?

Thank you :) I suspected as much.
My external drive is not dedicated to Video, it has general documents etc as well, hence my wondering about security and encryption.

Also wondering if I should encrypt the SSD on my iMac. Again, I suspect not a good idea from the editing perspective as its likely used for temp files etc.

Again, why encrypt in the first place? That's pretty high security. And yes, it will slow down intensive apps like NLEs too much.

… although 99% of my projects are 'hobby', I meanwhile own a shoebox full of drives, average price for a TB actually ~40-50€ for spinners, SSDs ~100-120€ … ok, I don't have the need nor the wish to access everything any time ;)

Ext. drives offer additionally the 'physical locked away'-factor = add that to security.
Friends on their months long trips with a camper keep a backup of their precious photos&videos always 'in their shirt' = Samsung offer extSSD/1TB, size of a matchbook. And fast enough for editing… in many cases.

speaking of backups… ;)
