Link sub projects to a master project was created by graham.easton
I am editing a holiday video where I have set up a master event / project for the final film and a number of sub events for the various places visited.
Once I have edited each sub project I copy the time line and then paste it into the master project time line..
This works Ok for me but it did occur to me that there may be a way in which if I go back to a sub project time line and make some changes that this could be linked so the changes show in the master project /timeline.
Is this possible or am I expecting too much
Many thanks
Graham

I do that a lot, and it's easy. In your "sub-project" once done, Select All, then create a Compound Clip (named appropriately). Place that Compound Clip into your main project. Then when you need changes, double-click the compound and make them. Those changes will be reflected in all copies of that compound clip universally inside that Library.

Welcome aboard! You're in for a really exciting adventure through FCPXland.
As an Apple cer'd trainer for over a decade, I can tell you from experience that Ripple Training, the basic FCPX course, will save you tons of headaches and time in the long run.
Lesson 1, forget everything you've ever learned about any NLE, ever.
Don't hesitate to access the user manual often, it's fairly good at covering the basics.

I also run a web site for Apple pro app users, with free resources. The "Support Links" page had dozens of links to resources that can be a real help, too.

Hi
Just finished trying out your method of linking time lines in various projects to a master timeline and I must admit it was so easy.
Regarding your advice on Ripple training I will certainly look into that further
Once again many thanks for your help
I must get to grips with the meaning of project in FCPX .

FCPX.guru,
That is amazingly helpful! Today I was just wondering the same thing since I have several projects going that share the same sssets.
I’m guessing this works with titles too?
And lets say you create four “copies” of the master CC, if you make a change to any of them will it change all the others? Or does the change need to be made on the first “master” CC. My gurss is the change reflects editing amy of them.
Such good info here...

The "Parent" CC lives in the Browser.
The "Child" copies of the CC live in Timelines.
They are all hard linked together.
If you want to make changes to one that do NOT reflect in the others, select that CC in the Timeline, go to the Clip menu, select "Reference New Parent Clip".
A "Project" is where you do your main edits. In legacy FCP and other NLE's, the Project is the file you open to work in. We have Libraries, which contain everything for a production. Inside that Library you can sub-group things into Events, including Projects, which are the Timeline types you do you main edits in. This may be too basic, but...

Like I said, based on student experiences from many classes, take everything you've learned about NLEs, throw it out the window. Trying to make comparisons will only confuse you. But if you start from scratch with understanding workflow concepts and terminology, you'll be fine. It's about the easiest NLE to learn, honestly.
We're here to help, lots of folks here on this forum who know lots to stuff I don't. Never hesitate to ask.
