As in the thread title, I’ve been working on the same project for years so I’m a few versions out of date with both FCPX and the Mac OS.
The project’s nearly finished now (hooray!) but I’m unsure of the smoothest way to upgrade.
Any advice on this gratefully received!
Mike

First: Don't.
Finish the project.
If you have to update, update the OS to 10.13.5 and then update the application to 10.4.3. This version is very different in fundamental ways from the version you're using as the application was redesigned. Check your computer capabilities before you update. The system requirements for the OS and for FCP have increased marginally but the practical use of the application requires quite a bit more in terms of processor power and especially graphics processing than the minimum requirements listed.
Finish the project.

Thanks Tom. I should have made it clear that I won’t be upgrading ‘til the project’s done- I’m just at the point where I’m close enough to start thinking about what to do when it’s over.
If it’s as simple as just updating the OS then FCPX then that sounds good!
