Recently after upgrading to Mac OS High Sierra , everytime I work on FCPx (latest version) my iMac (late 2012) suddenly stops working. After waiting some 20 minutes I can restart my iMac. A friend told me that this issue is related to the graphics card Nvidia (mentioned in the title). Is this true ? And if so, what do have I do /how ? Maybe it's also something concerning fan control. Don't know. Is this a common issue with all iMacs of late 2012 with High Sierra installed?

Thanks for your replies and help if possible. :-)

Hi Dimitri, welcome to the forums.
Sorry to hear about your problems with your iMac. Always frustrating.

There could be many reasons for your problems including nVidia GPU problems. Over the years there have been issues with nVidia cards/drivers and reliability, which is maybe one reason Apple switched to AMD and Intel GPUs.
So making some huge guesses here, you should be able to resolve the issues if it is related to nVidia driver issues which is the most common problem IMHO.
First, when you updated to High Sierra, did you do a clean install or just hit the update in App Store. Personally, I always do clean installs when updating between major OS releases and only do auto updates for minor point releases. This makes troubles less and trouble-shooting easier. Doing clean installs removes all old crud.
Sometimes new OSs will create conflicts with various components or software and create problems.

One issue may be that old GPU drivers or other system caches or extensions are interfering with your computer. You could start by booting your Mac in safe mode and allowing it to go through the system start routines. This may flush out old driver caches and other software/firmware/extensions that can cause problems. After it finishes booting, you can then do a normal boot and see if this resolves your problem. Expect the booting into safe mode and the 1st reboot to be much slower than normal.
See this Apple article… support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

If problems still exist, you may need to download and install the latest nVidia drivers for your Mac/GPU. nVidia is constantly updating it's drivers. The latest driver may not have been available in last system update.
See this site for links to latest drivers or go to the nVidia website… www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/apr18/Nvidi...4_Driver_CUDA_update
There are always lots of threads about nVidia problems on various Apple forums… www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/apr18/macOS...acOS10.13.4_problems

Hopefully after trying a safe boot or applying new drivers this will solve your problems.
Of course it could be something else altogether like file corruption, plug-ins etc…. See other threads about deleting media, checking plug-ins, launching as new user for other trouble shooting ideas.

Hope this Helps, Greg
