Is there any way to set audio roles, so your outputted master file matches the way you have roles set in your project.
It feels like FCP is switching audio back on that I have muted
(also I have to correct the settings afresh for each new output)
Thanks

If I understand correctly what you're saying, you're probably deactivating roles in the index panel by unchecking them, exporting and expect them not to be exported. That is not the way it works. Unchecking them mutes them only for monitoring while you work. They will still export in case you forgot to switch them on again.
To export only the roles you want, what you need to do is:
TO EXPORT VIDEO + AUDIO
File > share > master file > settings >
video format : video and audio
roles as: multitrack quicktime
Remove all the roles you don't want by click on the minus sign on the right and add those want by clicking add audio track or add video track on the bottom
TO EXPORT AUDIO STEMS ONLY
File > share > master file > settings >
format : audio only
Roles as: audio only as separate files
And choose the roles you want to export the same way as described above for video

Thank you so much
And apologies for delay coming on the forum again
Your answer is absolutely correct for my original question (it is what I do) but will hopefully have helped some others
However I think my problem is because I am going wrong much earlier in the process - so I need to step back a stage and see whether anyone can help my methodology
Essentially I wish to mute audio on a large set of clips
I had started using roles and muting these. And this works great on the timeline, but (as you correctly guessed Ronfya) this does not work at output
Without separating all the audio, there does not seem to be a quick way of switching off large numbers of (only) audio on clips
My clumsy workaround is to use search (in the "index") select all the clips that have a particular "role" and then pull the volume down manually to 0db for all those clips in the "inspector"
Any thoughts appreciated

Hi Jonniecharles.
I think your best bet is to select the clips that you want (that have the same roles) and if they are in your timeline just got to the Inspector panel on the right and in the audio tab, you can uncheck either individual audio channels or just turn off the audio tracks all together. This works with multiple clips so you don't have to do them one at a time. For my money this is also safer than lowering the volume on the track to zero because I know I'm not bumping anything and having trace amounts of audio come through.
This can also be done in the Browser before you start working with clips in the timeline. I work a lot with B-Roll footage of events and things like that and almost never use the audio from those so I just select them all in the Browser and turn off the audio before I bring them into the timeline. On the rare occasion I do want the audio from that clip I just turn it on for that one.
This will set you up for only hearing what you want when you're doing your final exports.
Cheers!
Doug

Actually, you CAN in fact mute specific roles on export.

Hi all - thank you for the feedback. And all answers have really helped my use of roles !!
However, it transpires Apple also didn't like the way roles were acting at 'sharing' either, and they have 'recently' made it so roles from your timeline ARE now maintained at the sharing stage
In fact - you now have to go through a bit of a rigmarole to switch 'muted' roles back on...
The bigger joy (for me) with this change, is your roles are also maintained when you 'Send to compressor' (this beautiful fast output function was incompatible with any use of roles on the timeline)
Thanks again all - Jonnie
