Hard disk seen as a camera was created by Makki
When I open imprt media, my media disk shows as camera not as device. My external SSD includes only folder with pro res clips in separate folders. It seem that has happened recently. I am running latest version of FCPX on High Sierra. I have never experienced this befor. My disk is fine., and other ext. disks show up as devices.

You have a folder or bundle on the root level of the drive with a name like PRIVATE or DCIM or something like that, which makes the application read the device as a camera drive.

That’s the only reason it occurs. Maybe you can post a screenshot of what’s on the root of the drive.

Regardless of what the file structure is on your drive, the problem is that FCPX sees it as camera media.
If you do not wish to have FCPX copy the media to your footage location, then you need to bypass the File>Import function.
*** First, make sure that Leave Files In Place is selected in your Import Preferences***
• Open a fresh Finder window and navigate to the folder where your media is located.
• Select all the clips you wish to import into FCPX
• Drag the clips from the finder window over to the Event in the FCPX Browser where you want to import
When manually performing an import in this way, FCPX will ignore it's default need to copy the media.
Hope that helps, and let us know what you find about the drive structure.

I do thinl it will not help, the folders have ordnary names no subfolders and all my clips have the mov. at the end. Thiere has not been a problem before, It was not a problem week a go. No new files added for months. So I suspect High Sierra a.

There was no problem with drag and drop. But the problem is still there , the media disk only show up as camera, so I can not use the import media option.

Maybe High Sierra changed something. If you can’t show the drive for us to see the problem castor be rectified.

Open your screen capture in Preview.
Change DPI to 72.
Don't let it be any wider or taller than 1200 pixels.
Export it as JPEG.
Back to the issue, and not trying to be harsh, but there's a solid truth here. That is, the ONLY way FCPX has EVER done this is when it sees a folder at the root level of the drive that it thinks is camera card content. Then it thinks the whole drive is part of that structure. I can guarantee that is it. You need to look at what's in each root level folder, and what the names of each are.
I've had several folks come to me inviting this isn't it, but when we look closely, they missed something, and that IS the issue. Nothing else can mechanically cause this. It is not a HS thing, I can assure you.

I don't know Icelandic characters (I really wish I did), but it could be. I was thinking about that, but didn't say anything, cause I don't know Icelandic.

Now I have finished examing everry single file on my external, even changed the names of some names with Icelandic special characters. The problem is still there. Have reinstalled FCPX. Is there any other options. This make FCP almost usnusable.

Solved. The culprit was the Icelandic special characters. After renaming all clips and folders to English the disk is back under devices . But I certainly do not like to name my media in English, but this was the solution.
