Compound clips VS layer adjustment

Hello,
I use mostly compound clips when I need to apply colorgrading or FX on a big sequence.
I was wondering if I would be better off using an adjustment layer.
There are probably Pro's and Con's of using one or the other.
Or...maybe I'm not doing this right at all!

I did search the forum but didn,t find anything.

Thanks,

With an adjustment layer, you have more control. You can see all your edits, work with them directly. A Compound hides your edits and you have to go into it to change edits. Save hassle, save time, use the Adjustment Layer method. Performance wise, not much difference, maybe safer with the adjustment layer.

Will try that.
I don't mind opening up the compound but as you say it might work better with the ajustment layer.
Once the basic colorgraing is done I could then work my luts with the ajustment layer.

Thanks.

There is one possible performance issue -- if the timeline contains several compute-intensive effects and the user doesn't understand that changing an adjustment layer will invalidate the render files for the entire timeline.

Normally FCPX doesn't need clips rendered in order to edit, but sometimes people add very compute-intensive effects such as 3rd party 3D titles or video noise reduction. They then render those in the timeline (which could take 30 min or 1 hr) and expect them to "stay rendered". However modifying an overlaying adjustment layer -- even trimming the end by 1 frame -- will invalidate the render files for the entire timeline. This is expected behavior but it surprises some people.

Nice to know.
Since I am aware of some areas of my edit that might be or eventually could be render intensive I would duplicate the ajustment layer and I could then make changes to where it is needed and not the whole sequence.
I presume there is no drawback to having more than one if properly managed.
