Here's a good way to approach it:
If you want to add an effect to a clip in order to "fix" it or make it look like the surrounding clips, then apply your effects directly to the clip.
If you want to apply a "look" to a segment of your edit, then adding the effects to an adjustment layer will make changes the easiest down the road.
FCPX is flexible and as you use it, you'll find an approach that works best for you.

there's no diference. I prefer to apply to an adjustment layer (except CC), its faster to enable / disable (especially when u have more than one fx) . just select the adjustment layer and V. But don't forget, applying to adjustment layer it will affect all clips below.

some fx don't have a slider for the amount, so it's useful to be able to adjust it this way

The adjustment layer will not offer any adjustments that are not already a part of the effect. So if there is no slider for the amount of a particular parameter of an effect, there will also be no slider for that when applied to an adjustment layer........if that's what you were referring to.lightgale wrote: some fx don't have a slider for the amount, so it's useful to be able to adjust it this way

agree, I was talking about a general slider, can't remember by heart but I remember being annoyed some fx don't have that function to control the amount applied, so you could easily resort to the general transparency of the adjustment layer in order to control it

The adjustment layer has no published parameters. You can adjust the opacity of a clip in the compositing section of the inspector without any effect or adjustment layer and while this may produce some visual on a clip with an effect applied, it will not adjust purely the effect.
