Audio sync using TC for Zoom F8
The scenario
Mirrorless camera with no TC, outputting via HDMI to an Atomos Shogun recorder
The camera video delay is 3 frames, due to video processing.
Sound is via Zoom F8, which is TC source for the video recorder. F8 is recording multi track audio
The challenge
To be able to take the video and the audio files and using TC get acceptable lip sync
Possible adjustment points
Shogun has Audio Delay in frames . This obviously has no effect on the audio files recorded by the F8
The F8 has 3 options: 1) Input delay - max 30ms 2) TC delay 3) Output delay
My gut feeling is that 3) is of no consequence as we need to slip internal recording
I don't fully understand 2)
It would make sense that 1) is the answer, except 3 frames at PAL 25fps is 120ms (i.e. 0.12s), which is much longer than the 30ms max.
Another option would be to batch re-write the TC in the files, either the audio or the video, and THEN creating the Sync clips. I don't know what tool would do this. Any ideas?
Any other comments on what I am trying to achieve?
Thanks in advance...

Personally I would record audio from the camera on the Shogun, forget about TC and use the audio sync feature in FCPX to sync the audio files to the Shogun video files. This should work as the audio on the HDMI input will be sync with the delayed pictures.
It may be possible to enter a TC offset when batch syncing using Syn ‘n’ Link ?

Audio link works fine until you have lots of short clips and the computer needs to identify small segments of audio.ianstubbs wrote: Goodness, this one takes some thought. Essentially you need to delay the TC arriving at the Shogun by three frames but the F8 doesn’t support delaying the TC output feed, just the audio outputs. In short, I can’t see how you can do this at time of recording

One thought would be to set the Shogun audio delay to 3 frames and record the L/R mix output from the F8. This would give a better quality audio on the video file, as it comes out of the F8.
QTchange from VideoToolshed can slip the TC on the video file, apparently. That may be a solution to do as a batch process, before ingesting into FCPX.
