Hi

Although most of you are Mac based, perhaps someone has some experience along these lines.

Can anyone update me on the viability of ProRes CODEC when it arrives at a PC based facility? We just delivered some ProRes 422 material outside the USA and the Broadcaster couldn't play it at all. Had to redeliver.

Got me thinking about the PC Platform. Moving forward I guess people aren't installing Quicktime at all. So if we send out ProRes in a Quicktime wrapper are we hosed?

Does Premier or Avid bundle their own decode solution?

What happens if ProRes is wrapped into an MXF deliverable? Same situation as delivering a ProRes .Mov I'd guess...

Thanks in advance

RED cinema cameras can record ProRes, some ARRI Alexa cameras can, the Canon C700 can, Black Magic cameras can, the Sony FS7 can, even our DJI Inspire 2 drone can. Most external recorders can.
Several of these cameras more often record raw, but if your broadcaster cannot accept ProRes, they certainly won’t be able to handle raw.

They should have a document stating their technical acceptance criteria. It’s probably better to obtain that, otherwise it’s a guessing game.

I deliver to broadcasters weekly. First, get a printed or PDF of their delivery specs and print it out. Second, get the name and phone number (email if not) of the person best suited to answer technical questions when you have them, and you will.

Wow, I just gave that lecture to a high school class last week...

But yeah, avoid sending ProRes or any .mov files to someone on a PC unless they specify something. And a broadcaster will have their standard specs written up to give to distributors.

Apple stopped support of encoding proRes on Windows in 2016, e.g. mentioned in this 3rd party article .

But, although announced way before, many software makers, incl. Adobe, missed the date to program their own implementations … which lead many to the conclusion "no more proRes workflow at all" - which is probably not too wise, as mentioned above, many cam manufactures use proRes. Here a list from Apple:
support.apple.com/en-us/HT200321

BBC and EBU allow proRes for delivery, for example.
Adobe meanwhile has a proRes encoder…
No idea about Avid …
A broadcasters QC should accept proRes…

but no official Apple-native, Quicktime4Windows proRes Encoder available … for years.

Thanks for the replies.

Had to deliver my first MXF yesterday. After a bit of research it all went well. But I did notice that FCP X makes ProRes an option for packaging up in MXF ( I didn't use it for this delivery ) ... seems a bit risky.

But as FCPX.guru quite wisely said ... get the phone number of the person it's going to.

Yeah, its a mess out there. :(

I love standards. Aren’t they great? There are so many of them. Enough of everyone to have their own.

Why would anyone want to put a huge ProRes file in an MXF wrapper?

"Industry Standards" died with the advent of HD video... (sigh)
