Do people use color calibration colorimeters? I want to color calibrate iMac Pro and a Cinema screen. Should I buy Datacolor Spyder 5 Elite or X-Rite Munki Display?

I have researched this question on Google, so I've read most of the on-line reviews, but was wondering what FPC users find the best.

+1 on this. I'd be interested too in others experience with calibrating Apple displays. I've used X-Rite i1Display Pro on my Thunderbolt monitor with my 2013 Mac Pro. I have a new iMac Pro but haven't calibrated the display yet.

I have an old Spyder3, which I know is superseded by the Spyder5, but decided to try it. First off the software, which up to date, complained that it could intialise properly, but then it worked anyway! I ran through the tests for both iMP and Cinema screen. In both cases the s/w said it couldn't save the created profile, but it DID!

I then compared the new profiles with ones I created years ago and found that I actually preferred one from 2014 for the Cinema screen. For the iMP I chose the new one.

For my desktop background I use krazyblog.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/6291.png but I find just as useful to open any white background window on both monitors and eyeball the colors.

I've decided not to spend my $$ on the new Spyder5 - at least for now.

I use the X-Rite Colormunki. It seems to work OK and it brings my various Macs and Windows PC into closer match. The software is sort of clunky but it works. When iMac retina screens came out there was a bug so the post-calibration gamma was way off but X-Rite fixed that in a software update.

I've never calibrated an Apple monitor. And with the iMac Pro, I see no reason too, seems accurate enough to me. I get to see my work on local TV pretty often, and it looks just fine.

I just use the built in calibrator. hold option when you click "calibrate" under the display preferences, that way you get "expert" mode. (I thought they had removed it, I was glad to see it was still there).

Make sure you do it under the right lighting conditions and monitor brightness.

After I'm finished I'll look at a SMPTE HD Bars to confirm and adjust if I was off.

all the best,
