Effects causes FCPX to crash was created by bonepicker
When I try to apply an Effect to a project it crashes.
This seems to be the result of a glitch in a Pixel Film Studios plugin: either Pro Smoke5 or Rulers. However, I removed them and then ProMap began failing so I removed it. Now effects are causing a crash.
I have managed to narrow it down now to one Library.
I have Duplicated the Project in a new Library and made a Snapshot in a New Library and in the original Library, but it keeps crashing. An d the effect I had in one particular clip is now gone. This was the final edit of a 43 min film so is a bit of a drag.
I am using El Capitan and FCPX 3.4
Does anyone have an idea how I can find what is causing the crash?
Richard

I never trusted Pixel Film Studios products. Remove them from all clips in your Timeline, then uninstall them all.
If the Library itself is corrupted, you can create a new one, and move your clips to the new Library. Create a new Project Timeline, copy/paste your current Project Timeline to it.

Thanks for this.
I have removed everything, ie plugins and the generated effect.
I created a new library and copied events and project but the bug is still there, at least effects will not work.
I will now try moving clips and then the timeline and see if that works.
Cheers

If you have successfully uninstalled the Pixel Film plugins, rebooted your system and you still have a problem with crashing, then I'm inclined to believe your issue is something else such as a corrupt clip. Since you created a new library and copied all of your clips and projects over to the new library, you likely also copied any render files that live in the events. I would suggest three things:
1. If you can recall any point in time when your project was working, you can locate a backup copy of that project which will have been autosaved by FCPX (unless you set it not to make backups). Try opening a backup copy to see if that works. You may have to go back several iterations of a backup to find a good working version.
2. If you want to keep your current timelines you can try removing render files. If FCPX crashes upon opening the library, in the Finder select your new library and control-click it to show and open package contents. For each event, find the render files folder and drag it to the trash. Then reboot and restart FCPX and see if it opens. NOTE - any clips that have been rendered in the timeline will have to be re-rendered if you need that for smooth playback. If the project is able to be opened, you can do this from within FCPX by selecting the Library and in the top menu choose "Delete generated Library Files" - then select ALL render files. Doing it manually thru the finder sometimes seems to work whereas doing it inside FCPX does not always remove everything.
3. If that doesn't solve the issue, it might be worth purchasing Digital Rebellion's Pro Maintenance Tools and use that to repair any projects in the library.

Thanks dgwvideo.
What I did not try was seeing if the Effects would work on another clip. I will try that and then delete the offending clip and see if that works. This is a :43 min film, so deleting all generated files and rebuilding would be a fair bit of work for one clip effect.
I will tackle with your suggestions and see what works.
In the meantime - no more Pixel Film Studio plugins. Too bad as I used their Promap quite a bit and so far have not found another similar Plugin or software. But, this issue has cost me about 2 days in cumulative time.
Again, thank so much for your suggestions guys.

It's actually not much work at all. You would just be deleting render files, and possibly analysis files associated with stabilization, etc. Those could be regenerated pretty quickly if needed. If you are unsure about trying that, then simply create a new (third) library and try it in that one. You can also duplicate each project one at a time and try deleting the render files for just that project to see if you can narrow down a culprit.
