All of them, at times, will change the duration of the clip I apply it to.
Does anyone know why, and more importantly, how to prevent it?

FCPX' own Sharpener effect contains nothing which could affect the duration of a clip…
Can you share a screenshot of your timeline, where you apply the effect to?

It is the simplest of training videos - f our clips, no nat sound, just a VO.
Dissolves between the clips.
The only thing is the raw video is 1080P and I am cutting on a 720P timeline.
It doesn't happen all the time - I have about 85 videos to cut this way, I am into #30.
It has happened on maybe 4 of the ones I have edited.
I have tried applying sharpening before and after colour correction - no difference.
I have made it a compound clip and then applied - the same thing!
I emailed FCPEffects (one of the plugins I have). They were able to duplicate it, but have no idea why its happening.

Really, how exactly is anything "contracted" duration-wise by sharpening?

4-second clips become 6-second clips when sharpened.
Replacing the video make no difference. Turning the timeline into a compound clip and then sharpening doesn't help either.
Frustrating!

No doubt it is.
But as mentioned above and before: show us your timeline and the inspector of that clip …
because, as said - when you open the Sharpen effect in Motion, there's absolutely zero which could affect the timing.
Even contrary: rule #1 in FCPX is "A second is a second" - e.g. one can mischmasch all sorts of fps's - FCPX does a perfect job keeping the beat. Just manipulating pixels has no effect on timing. You have to do intentionally some clicks to re-time.
sooo, show us your screen …
And just to exclude the obvious - apologies for asking silly questions:
we speak of Effects/Sharpen, which comes in the Inspector with a single slider, preset to '2.5' … ?
