I can also verify that in clamshell mode (laptop closed, plugged in to external display), import crashes FCPX version 10.3.4 on a TouchBar 2017 MacBook Pro, running High Sierra 10.13.1.

Opening the laptop fixes the issue.

I got a call from Apple telling me that the clamshell mode issue has been resolved in FCPX 10.4.
