New MacBook pro i7 for editing? was created by gaddster
Is anyone using the new MacBook pro (kaby lake) i7 for editing?
Thinking of upgrading my 2014 i7 and wondering what the pros and cons are (besides the price obviously)
Ive got a 2014 iMac i7 for any work based at home

I have a 2015 and 2016 i7 MBP and have used a 2014 a lot for FCPX editing of 4k H264 material. The 2016 is definitely, noticeably faster. However comparing my 2015 to 2017 iMac 27, the 2017 is vastly faster at H264 rendering, encoding and transcoding from H264 to ProRes proxy. It is roughly 2x faster than the 2015 model. I assume this is the improved Kaby Lake Quick Sync but am not sure.
If the 2017 MBP is similarly faster than the 2014 and if you edit lots of 4k H264 it might be worth it. If you edit 1080p or ProRes it might not be.
As has been discussed ad nauseam, the lack of an SD card reader and having to use a bag full of dongles on the new MBP can be a pain. How this impacts people varies -- if you never work in the field and never travel anywhere this might not be a factor. But if you must frequently plug into USB-A, HDMI, or use SD cards from cameras, it is a pain.
OTOH one benefit is you can run the MBP from a DC power pack like this Anker PowerCore + 26800 PD: a.co/4DR8l1V

I was just wondering the same thing... I'm on a 2012 Retina MacBook Pro (2.6ghz i7, 16gb ram)
Having just edited quite a big project (theatre show 1h18m + trailers mixed 4K and HD) I really want a new computer... At the moment, I could buy top of the line 5K iMac and keep the 2012 MBP and be really really broke... or I could sell it and get the 2017 MBP 3.1 and have a bit left... but then I realised that a good chunk of what would be left would be eaten up by having to buy dongles... soooo... it's a tricky decision...
Would like to here more how people find the latest MBP as well!

Hey !
I just got the 2017 MacBook Pro 15" (14,3) 3.1GHz with 1TB SSD and 560 4GB GPU..
I upgraded from a 2011 MacBook Pro 17" (8,3) 2.3 GHz with 512 SSD and 1GB GPU
It really flies in FCPX, also with plugins like Color Finale Pro & Koji Advance .. DaVinci Resolve 14 is noticeably faster..
The Touch Bar is taking so getting used to, my fat fingers keep hitting the it all the time.. IT is so much lighter and smaller than the 17", I love it.. I could not be happier..!
I exported a 3 minute video at 1080P H264 today and it took around 20 seconds...
I found the article that Peter Wiggins wrote on FCP.CO very useful in making my decision to upgrade... See below..

Let me know if you want me to run a certain test for you ?
