Utility or method to proactively avoid missing media?

Editors in a hurry often add media to a library without copying that to the media drive, then send the media drive to a collaborator, who then sees red "missing media" thumbnails.

The solution of consolidating does not work if using in-place media. The library inspector shows IF media is on another drive but doesn't tell you the filename, path, or number of files. You can't easily verify where your media is on a file-by-file basis, which means you can't easily locate what files aren't on the media drive.

This in turn results in editor 2 calling editor 1 saying "you sent me missing media", then editor 2 does a Reveal In Finder for each red thumbnail, reading the filename to editor 1, who looks up each one and sends the missing media to editor 2. This is very laborious.

Is there an FCPXML utility to examine library or event XML to see whether it's on a designated media drive? This would allow the first editor to proactively verify all media is present. Is there some other solution?

Should be pretty easy with XML.
I'll think about it.
Send me an XML to spherico(dot)mail(at)gmail(dot)com

OK I'll send an example shortly. I've always worked around this problem, believing there must be some utility or procedure which addresses it if I looked hard enough. Today I finally made a purposeful search, and don't see anything. This problem is so common I can't believe no utility or procedure exists.

Yes everyone should always put their media in a standardized location. But in the hustle-and-bustle of rapid development, especially toward the end of a project, this doesn't always happen. In a single-editor environment it's no problem, and in a collaborative LAN environment it's not as bad. If using a managed library it's not bad -- just consolidate then send the hard drive. But in a detached collaborative environment using "leave files in place" media it's a real nuisance.

Yep - same old story with media in any environment.

I had this kind of utility for FCP.
Over the weekend I'll have a look to create one for X as well.
