I want to replace my 2013 iMac 27" i7 1TB SSD 32GB ram . My budget is about $7k.
Would I be better off with:
Do you think that the iMac 5k price will drop when the Pro is shipping?
Would I be better off with:
- Buy current 5k iMac with i7 and 1TB SSD 8GB ram then swap ram to 64GB from Mac Sales, or
- get an iMac Pro for whatever specs the budget allows (and use MacSales for RAM)
Do you think that the iMac 5k price will drop when the Pro is shipping?

Either unit will be a big improvement over the 2013 model, but I would suggest you wait a couple more weeks as the iMac Pro is supposed to be available in December.

I have a 2013, 2015 and 2017 iMac 27. For FCPX on H264 material, the 2017 is much faster.
However be advised the iMac Pro's ECC RAM (according the current info) is not user replaceable.

Although the bigger question is does the Xeon CPUs have the ability to accelerate H.264 decode/encode as the i series CPUs with Intel QuickSync? I've heard this is on the Xeon roadmap but not sure if those will be in the iMacPro.
