Transcoding question

Transcoding question was created by desmondx
Hey, I have roughly 2TB worth of DSLR H.264 footage on a 3TB drive and I have just started importing the media into events in FCPX. I don't have enough space to transcode all 2TBs of footage so my question is, is it worth transcoding any of it?? If half the project was pro res and half was H.264 wouldn't that mess with the project settings as half would not be compatable? And if I were to transcode only some of the footage, would it be better for the project settings to be H.264 or pro res?
Thanks

If you have the hardware to run it, leave it all H.264. You can mix formats in a Timeline just fine, it's not a problem.

I'll assume that 3TB drive is an external FW800?
Do a project with native H.264, see how it performs. My guess is that it'll do fine for smaller productions. When you get into larger productions on a laptop, you may want to have FCP X create Proxie media, edit with that (Preferences > Playback > switch between proxie and original), then switch back to the original H.264 before exporting the final work.
