sorry for the stupid question. I need a video fade in/out fade to black type effect (not a transition). I found one at stupid raisons (among other great stuff). I downloaded it and have a couple thumb nails, a .moef file, and a media folder. I am running a fresh install of FCPX 10.3.4 on Sierra 10.12.2. I do not have motion, just FCPX.

How do I install this effect? I have searched and nothing really seems to make sense or seems overly complicated or not specific to my setup.

Thanks for your patience....!

It should all be inside one folder, usually named after the effect.

Go to your user folder, to Movies, to Motion Templates, and put it in the correct category.

Being a .moef that's an effect.

Do NOT break up the internal folder hierarchy.

It should have come with installation instruction. Everything I've gotten from them has. Or an installer.

Folder structure:

Fade in Fade Out (top folder)
>Media (empty sub folder)
>small.png
>large.png
>Fade in Fade Out.moef

My Motion Templates folder is empty.

Thanks....

Wow! A virgin FCPX system! It's been so long...

So, create a folder called "Effects" inside of the Motion Templates folder. Then put the folder with that effect in it. The "Fade in Face Out" top folder with contents intact.

That's not true!
The standard folders should have a ".localized" extension.

To be complete:
For the hobby or ugly FCPX standard installations (use only when you will not exchange/move projects  )

1) Create folder (if needed): ~/Movies/Motion Templates.localized
2) Then create subfolders:
Compositions.localized
Generators.localized
Transitions.localized
Effects.localized
Titles.localized

For a more professional solution
Create following folders. Again if needed - but these should there with any basic FCPX. If not: something is wrong.
1) /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro
2) Within this folder: Templates.localized
3) There create subfolders:
Compositions.localized
Generators.localized
Transitions.localized
Effects.localized
Titles.localized

Then inside these subfolders you can create "category folders". These might or might not have a .localized extension.

Put your "Fade in Fade Out" into the Effects.localized

Template organization is one of the weak points of iMoviePro
The option to carry templates inside a library makes it even worse!

Was a joke of mine, early versions of FCPX were called "iMoviePro" cause of missing Pro features.

Anyway I would recommend to put your stuff into the boot drives Library as described.
You won't have trouble finding right names for folders.
Things will be there, even if you have to create a new user etc.
