Subwoofer Hookup for 5.1 Surround Sound was created by haysoos123
Hi all,
It's been a long time coming, but I'm finally getting around to hooking up a proper 5.1 monitoring setup in my edit suite. The ultimate goal is to be able to do a lot of the surround work in-house, before it goes out for mixing. Also, I'd like to be able to do a half-way decent mix in FCPX.
My questions is: how are people hooking up their subwoofers? I think the default setup is that it goes to its own discreet channel (channel 4 in my setup). But if that's the case, won't you only hear the sub if you put something in the LFE channel? How does the sub get blended in to handle the low frequencies from something like the music tracks, for example? An alternate way is to hook up the sub to channels 1 and 2, and then hook up L and R to the sub, but that doesn't give me the discreet channel for 5.1.
The hardware is: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 and Yamaha HS7 monitors, HS8S subwoofer. In the Focusrite Control, you can do things like mix Channel 1 + 2 into 4, but I'm worried that is multiplying the signal in an improper way. What are all you guys with surround monitoring doing?
