AR and FCPX? was created by realdavidai
I’ve been away from FCPX for a bit, however I’ve been seeing a lot going on with AR and even the stuff Instagram and Snapchat are doing in real-time with Augmented Reality.

Is there a similar technology that will allow AR content to be edited into FCPX projects?

Hey David,

AR can have many different meanings, going from interactive 3D projection and 360 VR integration (the heavy stuff) over graphics overlays that interact with live images in sports or corporate projects (the practical stuff), to simple apps on mobile phones and iPads that dynamically integrate artificial images with the live camera image of your device (the funny stuff).

On the heavy stuff side, quite some big-scale 3D and 360VR augmented reality productions have already been done with FCP X. Duncan Shepherd explains how they used Dashwood 360VR in FCP X to integrate graphic elements with 360VR footage for the Paul McCartney VR series:

And Tom Sefton explains how they used FCP X to produce the Forever Project, 3D projected images that interact dynamically with live audiences:

Tim Dashwood, the man who developed the 360VR plugins for FCP X, has joined Apple. So I think it's fair to say we may expect a lot of new and interesting things related to AR, VR and 360 in FCP X in the near future.

For the mobile platform AR (the funny stuff), Apple has introduced ARKit at WWDC 2017. This means they are very serious about the adoption of AR on mobile platforms. But these technologies can (and will) certainly make it over to the professional world as well:

AR and AI will be two of the next big things in professional content creation. And FCP X is one of the best suited NLEs to integrate these emerging technologies.
