Pegasus Raid Array Owners: I Have a Question

I just received my Pegasus3 R6 24TB Raid 5 array. Does your Pegasus hard drives make a lot of noise while you’re archiving video in FCPX? Is this normal? I was archiving some 4K video which archived fine but, the hard drives made a lot of noise while doing so. I'd like to add, the drives are quiet during native playback of the archive. I would sincerely appreciate it if you would let me know. Thanks, Ray :)

My P2 R4 makes next to no noise most of the time. When waking up or doing heavy file copies to/from it, it makes a very tiny bit of noise. But I was fortunate enough to get an early model that came empty and put my own 4TB drives in it. I'd contact Promise support about it if you think it's too much noise. Do you think it is more noise than a regular drive should make?

It's like a consistent gurgling sound from all the drives. I'm sure the drives are ramped up (spinning) at their maximum during the archiving process. I can playback the 4K video flawlessly (without jitter/hesitation) on my 2016 15" MacBook Pro. in which the Pegasus drives are 99% quiet. I only hear a quick slight gurgle sound once in a great while. Thanks for your input. Ray :)

That's noisy read/write heads swinging back and forth over the drives. I have very slight sound like that, but it's slight, not loud. If yours are loud, I'd contact Promise.

I believe you're right......... I did contact Pegasus and they stated that this was normal. I figured that this would be their answer therefore, real world, on hand users like you, I.M.O. would give me the best answers. I'm not saying Promise is wrong but.......... Thanks for your help, Ray :)

You never specified how actually loud the noise is. And if it is only during "archiving" (whatever that means to you, I've no clue) then, well, does it matter?

Can't really describe how loud the drives were. Just that it's loud enough to hear that they're ramped up to full speed. As for Archiving, this is a safe way to backup your media straight of your SD card. It's a bit for bit copy of your media saved for FCPX editing. This is something I learned from Steve Martin & Mark Spencer of Ripple Training. If you don't know what Archiving is, below is one of many video's out there on the subject. :)

"Archiving" can mean several things. You're archiving your camera cards, good. Didn't know if you were doing that or archiving your Libraries.

This is the first thing I do. If I don't have time to archive and need that same SD card for further shooting, I save the entire card structure on a portable external hard drive. I do plan on archiving Libraries as well. I'm currently learning FCPX and have Ripple Training video's. I'm sure you're familiar with them and I.M.O. they are, in a word, awesome. I enclosed another video further explaining archiving for those of you that may be interested. Ray :)
