When I started using FCPX, I had a laptop with only 512GB of SSD, so I took to keeping all my video content on an external USB3 drive, which I've had to replace twice as it fills up. But now I've got a iMac with a 2TB hybrid drive. So I'm thinking it would be faster to keep my content on the main drive instead of an external drive. Would it be? If it is faster to do that, then how to I archive my old events/projects to an external drive when I'm done with them so I don't fill up the main drive?

Keep your stuff on a fast secondary drive. The OS & apps write & read hidden working files constantly, write/read/remove data in RAM and all that takes bandwidth. Doesn't matter how fast or large your internal drive is (at this time). Keep that system drive bandwidth open for the system to work fast. Keep your Libraries on a fast secondary drive. USB 3 is fine.
