Assembling a movie from multiple Libraries (dependent compound clip issue)

Hi all

I am editing a feature film. Here is the situation:

• Multiple reels, each reel stored in its own library. Within each Library an edit has been done complete with Multicam clips. Then the whole edit was turned into a Compound Clip.

• My plan was to bring all of these Compound Clips (one per reel) onto a single 'Assembly' timeline in its own library, to assemble the final movie.

• I obviously want the Compound Clips to retain their dependencies so we can go back and make changes.

I cannot for the life of me get this to work. This is what I'm doing.

1. in the source library, copy the project on its own into a new event called 'Transfers'.

2. Copy this event to the 2nd library (the assembly library).

...But FCP insists on creating a new copy of the Compound Clip in the destination - and the dependency with the original is lost.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks - Jon

First, I'd have kept the whole film in one Library. I'd have given each Reel it's own Event.

Not following what the problem is here. I'll assume your Timeline is simply one Compound Clip. And the clips contained inside of that CC are in the other Event, from the same Library. This situation is needlessly overly complicated, to start with.

If you move a Project to a new Library, all the media has to go with it. Libraries don't cross-reference each other. They are each autonomous, independent of each other. Especially when you deal with a Compound. A Compound is not an independent clip, it is a container that has clips in it, and must carry those along with it.

Multiple Libraries just complicates things like this needlessly. Keep it all in one Library.
