Hi, I came across the following music video Star of the Show by Thomas Rhett (link below) that has an awesome effect.

I would like to know if anyone has done this freeze frame cloning effect in FCPX? If so, can you point out how it's done? Thanks, Ray :)

The effect in this video is an elaborately choreographed version of what Ben Balser demonstrates in his Future Freeze Frame tutorial - see here: finalcutprox.guru/videos-main/fcpx-videos/fcpx-videos.html

gosh, Feb 2013 … time flies by
Not my idea, but you will do hard to find a site using that expression 'Future Freeze' before my publication ;)

No, not in FCPX but in Motion, did that without any plug-in, simply using the MatchMove/'Tracker' on Motion 5 and using Pixelmator for the cut-out …

Nice eye-candy …

I agree that the Coremelt plugins let you do a lot of things right within FCP X. I tested them, and they are awesome. However, I didn't buy them 'cause they do have limitations.
Take the Thomas Rhett video above. It's a dolly/gimbal shot in which the masked freeze frame has to be scaled appropriately because the camera moves in the z-axis. The tracking data need to be better for this. It's not enough to track the x-y-position (i.e. of the chairs in Balsers tutorial), you have to extract the 3D camera positions in order to allow a still instance of the guy appearing oof in the foreground.

Therefore - as awkward and old-fashioned as it's GUI may be - I still consider After Effects the best app for these kinds of advanced tricks.

Moving lower thirds, tracked correction masks (if that's all you ask for): you'd be crazy not to use Coremelt.

Advanced motion graphics: Motion is simply the best, if as stand-alone or as template-programmer for FCP X.

Advanced compositing: After Effects.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for your input..... I have a little better understanding now of how it's done. I'll have to play around a bit once I get up and running. I do have Coremelt Slice X & TrackX, but haven't used it yet. I'm a newbie in learning FCPX coming from Sony Vegas Pro. I do have Ripple training videos in which I'm currently going through. Thanks again to all of you for your help & input, very much appreciated. Ray :)

Karsten and Axel - of course you are both correct about this. The video that RayPaula mentioned depicts a sophisticated version of the "Future Freeze" effect that would not be feasibly executed in FCP X for the reasons Axel mentions. Looks to my eye too that there are a couple of other intricate things happening in the video to enhance the effect - maybe using Mocha Pro or other tools, along with After Effects. It's well-choreographed like some of the OKgo videos.

RayPaula, FCPX using Coremelt's tracking plugins does give you the basic idea of what's going here - it's just this video is a pretty sophisticated.

Back when Coremelt introduced SliceX and TrackX at NAB (forget the year) I was invited to hang out at their booth and show off this exact same effects. Way easier than you think. No Motion or AE necessary. Karsten basically has it down.
