I'm stupid : How do I "repair" a blade cut ?

Hi !

For some reason, I can't figure this out ...

say I have a clip and I put a blade cut in it, but then I decide I no longer want that cut and I want to restore that section so it is back connected with the main clip .... how do I do it ??

Someone had suggested the "Trim" tool -- but I then have to kinda pull the cut all the way to the start of the clip and that doesn't work if there is another blade cut ....

isnt there just a simple way to "heal" or rejoin the two ??

Thanks!

If the two sides of the cut are contiguous you can simply select the edit point and press the delete key.

Hi Tom,

Sorry this is a double post so I am replying in both if you want to delete this and move to the other post. I'm not sure how to do that myself..

anyway, to the question, how do I select the edit point? I put the skimmer on the cut, I select the end [ so the handle is yellow ] and I press delete, it just beeps

Am I using the wrong tool? Doing it with the standard selector - see attached. I do this and then click 'delete' and just get the error beep. Is there another way to select edit point?

Thanks!

What version are you using? Are you using the Delete key next to =? If it's still beeping then the edit's been trimmed in some way and is not contiguous any more.

The attachment wasn't in your message.

Okay I just tried it on a fresh cut and it did work ...

does this not work if effects are applied? Thats the only difference I can think of ...

so Does the trim tool move the cut basically?

Sorry and thanks!

If you've applied an effect that you can't delete the edit with the Delete key. The two sides of the cut are now different. You have to use the Trim tool to roll out the edit point.

Okay thank you, that is why its not working. That makes sense then -- so if I roll the trim starting on a clip with an effect, that effect will apply through the adjoining clip and vice versa?

thank you !

Just tested this "effects" thing. Placed one clip on the Timeline. Bladed the middle. Tried with various different effects being placed on one half or the other. Always successfully removes the "Through Edit" with the delete key. Effect doesn't go away but applies to the full clip ONLY if it is on the first half. If the effect is applied to the second half, the Through Edit is removed, restoring the full un-bladed clip, and the effect is removed.

Seems FCPX does exactly what it's animation suggests. Deletes the second half of the clip with the Through Edit, and trims out the first half to fill up the necessary space.

But I'm not finding an effect that prevents me from removing a Through Edit.

Very strange... could it be because the clip is not on the main timeline but above it ? The clip in question is stacked over the main timeline . I wouldn't think that would make a difference but , not exactly sure why this doesn't work.

Also - what if there is a different effect on each side ? That could be it. I have to test it out based on your above research to see if I can figure out or isolate what causes the 'beep of refusal' lol

Thank you for all your help on this - will look and post back my findings.

Yes. When you blade a connected clip, it's two entirely separate instances of the same media. There is no magnetic timeline to support the clips. If the clips are adjacent you can use the roll toll to roll out the edit, but the delete key will not work without the magnetic timeline.

ahh okay, that makes sense. That explains it ! Okay, well now I know.

Defintiely clarifies why its working in some tests and not others then

Thanks everyone !

Just FYI;
If you want a Connected Clip to have the "magnetic properties" of the Primary Storyline, select it (or a group of connected clips) and his Command-G to make a Connected Storyline.
