I'm having a problem with gaps being left between photos when I change the duration. Dies anyone have a solution for this?

Are the photos connected clips? Combine them into a secondary storyline before changing the durations.

I had about 300 photos on the timeline and wanted to change the length to one frame. I did but it it left gaps between the photos. Fcpx crashed on me and upon restart I used the same process but this time it didn't leave gaps. This might be a bug of some sort. Thank you,

I had that happen to me a couple times as well. (can't remember why, may have been discrepancy between compound clip frame rate and project frame rate.) The easy fix is to open your timeline inspector and then search for gaps. Then just select and delete all the gaps. so long as everything is in your primary storyline, it'll work.
