Libraries and storage question

Libraries and storage question was created by mitchino
I've just finished editing a big project. The library, original footage, transcoded footage and proxy footage are all stored on an external Thunderbolt Drive. I need to reconfigure the mac I've been working on and I'm wondering how easy it will be to use the Thunderbolt drive on a different mac if I need to make changes to any of the edit. Which important files are stored on the host mac that I will need to move to the other mac?
Ideally I want to re-open the library on the other mac and carry on editing as normal - is this possible?

Yes. Based on your description, nothing is stored on the Mac. To be certain you might want to run the consolidate function on the library to ensure that all the media files are in the designated library location.

What about the "Final Cut Backups" folder in my Movies folder? Do I need that?

You only need that if there's some kind of failure, like the drive gets disconnected while you're working on it and the library gets corrupted. Once you open the library on another machine and start working in it, a new set of backups will start being built on the local system.

Don't forget the Motion Templets folder in your Movies Folder. Copy to the folder over or move to Library.
Motion will contain the effects that you might be using including 3rd party ones.
Hope this helps, Greg

Excellent point. Probably should make it standard practice and the default to embed Motion content in the library.

Hi Tom
Given Motion 5 is a standalone app and older versions of FCP have to use it as well w/o ability to move to library, think it will never be a default to move content to FCPX library. User "Stickiness" will be the most we'll see, IMHO
Happy Editing, Greg
