keep in mind:
iDVD comes, historically, from a very diff. era - … I haven't used it for a very long time, not sure, advice I gave on my website is still valid. :unsure:

afaik, the fancy animated stuff, theme 'Revolution' for example, hasn't survived …

But for a nice, custom-built menu, chapter selection etc, it's still the most convenient option.
And, no, no HiDEf output … 'iDVD for BluRay' never left the labs ... don't be underwhelmed by 'quality' …

And FWIW...Compressor will give you the exact same features that FCPX offers as outlined in Ronny's posts, but with more advanced encoding options. You can either send your project to Compressor from FCPX or create a full res master in FCPX and then import that into Compressor for creation of your DVD.

yeah encoding options - but no Authoring Options... what, imho, most people are looking for, customised designs, structures/hierarchics etc.

And for that, iDVD is/was unmatched, in its convenience. All done with drag'n drop

You could even create hidden EasterEggs in iDVD.

What it only lacked, and FCPX' disk creation tool do either
No 'play chapter only', and no 'play all'
When you select Chapter 3 (of 5), when done #3, no return back to Menu, but #4 and #5 follow.
Technically, it was no chapter-selection but a jump-mark…

And when you apply several individual clips, there's no 'play's all' button (Toast offered that, if I remember correctly).

Yes, agreed...no authoring options. For that we encode in Compressor and author in DVD Studio Pro which can still be installed in Sierra, or as others mentioned, Toast.

Does DVD Studio Pro offer completely customisable DVD menus?

Yes it is sophisticated and fully customizable. However I recollect we started having apparent compatibility problems with macOS back with Mavericks, and we haven't authored any DVDs since then. I don't think DVDSP has been updated since 2009.

@Joema,
I believe those incompatibility issues had to do with allowing DVD SP to encode the assets, but if the assets are encoded in Compressor or Squeeze (or some other current software) then the authoring and burning in DVD SP seems to work well. I also recall one user commenting on a UI issue in that the color picker was not functioning properly, but I have never experienced that. We used it successfully about 15 times in El Capitan over the past several months and I tested it (without actually burning) in Sierra which we just installed about a month ago. If you still have it and have any need to author a DVD you might give it another try. We are using it on a mid 2010 Mac Pro 12 core so possibly more current models react differently. I've not tried it on our newer MBP.
Dan.
