for what it's worth, RockyMountains Movie Converter is great at transcoding h265 to prores: sourceforge.net/projects/rockymountainsmovieconverter/files/

That's what makes it so great! You're just supposed to KNOW how it works. If you don't know how it works, you do not deserve to transcode H.265, Front-ends and GUIs are for wussies. Only lames make their apps easy to use.

Of course I'm kidding, I have no clue how it works either. Maybe by the time H.266 rolls around Apple will support H.265. They are usually pretty slow to new formats like that.

Well, the format is not officially finalized, is why Apple doesn't support it yet. It is what the next generation of TV broadcast will be based, and give over-air broadcasters IP capabilities. Basically the ability to do what cable TV companies do, rip you off for crap you don't want. The standard will allow on-demand and such over-air. And since over-air is a much less compressed signal, thus delivers infinitely higher quality HD images and audio, it's going to be a boon to over-air stations. In fact our station will be broadcasting 4K by this time next year. Thus, I'd not consider Apple slow or out of touch if they don't support a standard the is not finalized yet. And current projects are that the standard won't be done for about 2-3 more years. H.265 is in a beta state at the moment.

Near as I can tell H.265 was finalized in 2016. And the base codec was finalized in 2015. It's just the ancillary stuff like 3D and whatnot that took longer. However the licensing fees for H.265 are much higher. Same thing happened with Blu-ray. That's one reason that particular format didn't take off like DVD did. It kept proper Blu-ray creation out of the hands of people like us for a long time. I hope H.265 isn't the same way. If only studios get to use it for delivery encoding then it could be bad news.

I'm in broadcast TV, and we're staring down the barrel of the ATSC 3.0 coming standard, for which H.265 is the default codec, but specifically for ATSC 3.0 it is not finalized. I'm not sure what other industry standard use it is having at the moment. Who uses it for delivery besides some social media sites?

I don't think anyone really uses it for delivery now. All I currently know of is a few cameras that record their footage that way. I hope we get more vouchers for upgrade set top boxes again once our current tuners become obsolete. I am looking forward to MPEG2 going away. That was already obsolete when ATSC adopted it. It only looks acceptable when a station has no subchannels. But even then it's 1080i. Blech. I hope interlacing can finally go away forever.

We broadcast over-air 720HD, four channels, they look amazing. Far surpass cable or streaming.

terrestrial HD broadcast in Europe (DVB T2/HEVC) is h.265 encoded.

… but the conversion is done somewhere at the very end of the delivery chain, no broadcaster demands for h265 media …

Really? I see video quality fall apart on needlessly flashy transitions in football games all the time, even on the 720p channels. The bit rate is better than most streaming though. But streaming uses much more modern codecs... for now.

At least I can watch streaming when the wind is blowing. My TV channels fall apart during the wind.

I'll stick to documented facts. Over-air is far superior image quality than cable or streaming. Infinitely less compressed.
