So I had my footage on a external 4TB seagate drive with 3/4 days of footage under one LIBRARY, from last week or so was using this LiBRARY on 4Tb to work on fcpX.
Decided to move the entire project folder onto another Gtech drive so that I can take benefits of better speeds and copying the entire folder (which had all files , Library/videos/songs) etc ect
Opened FCP by double clicking the Library on my Gtech drive and bingo , it was fast, loved the speed of gtech drive, now after sometime, I removed my 4TB seagate drive and all of a sudden all the media show RED (Missing File)
by the Relink feature, I re linked the entire from the Gtech drive and all good now, but wondering why did that happeb as
- I copied all the contents
- I open fcp Lib from Gtech drive only
???

When you copy the library and external media to another drive, FCPX does not automatically access the media on the new drive. There are symbolic links inside the library which still point back to the original Seagate drive -- which was still on line. Part of each link is the drive volume name. When you removed the Seagate drive, FCPX could not find the media so it was marked missing.
There are two solutions in this case:
(1) Rename the new drive the same name as the old drive. Then the links in the library will point to the correct media location. If using external proxy files (ie outside the library) this also makes them work. No relinking is required. However you cannot always rename the drive because of possible naming conflicts with other existing drives, or maybe other software uses files on that drive and it is dependent on the original volume name.
(2) Relink the media which will work in most cases but for a lot data can take a while. It also doesn't always work correctly if using external proxies.

I actually copy whole libraries every other day to various drives to move them to various locations to be finished. I've never had a relinking issue.
Here's a huge library of support links to find info.

FCPX.guru wrote: Good idea to run consolidate after copying, should fix everything, IF you are using "managed media" and not "external media".
