Error Cord -36 (Can't fix alias)

Hey! I'm attempting to fix an alias in finder, but keep getting Error Code -36. The solutions I'm finding online have to do with copying files, which I'm not currently doing. Here's the process that's getting me to the error code:

- In FCPX, a file is missing. I right click on it and select "Reveal in Finder"
- Finder opens the Original Media folder within my library and reveals an alias file (icon for the file is the blank white page)
- Right click on the alias and select "Show Original"
- Popup reads "The alias 'Session1.mov' can't be opened because the original item can't be found."
- Select "Fix Alias"
- Select the file and click "Open"
- Error pops up: The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -36).

The file I'm attempting to connect to the alias is off a server, not an internal or external drive. I'm on an iMac running OS X El Capitan (10.11.6). I'm new to the forum game, so let me know if there is any other information that could be helpful! Thanks, much!

Hi ellewhite7
Welcome to the forums :)
First question would be where is the server with the file you want? Is this server yours or is this a server on the internet? Is this server formatted for Macs with HFS+ or is this a Windows or Linux based server? Error code -36 can be due to format issues when going between file system formats. An alias is just a address pointer for a remote file, so really you are attempting to copy or use the file from the server.
Instead of using the alias, can you download the actual file to your system either internally or externally? If you can download the actual file, then have FCPX link to the new file location not the alias for the server. This will likely resolve your issue.
If you can do that and still have this problem, there are some hidden file naming that may cause this issue and can be address with terminal if you feel comfortable with using Terminal. Would need to know what macOS version you are using.
Do you have this issue with other files linked via aliases on the same server or can you use links for other files without issues? Is this the only file you use from that server?
Do you have a good connection to the server?

Hope this helps, Greg

If you disconnect from the server, when you reconnect, the link may not reestablish. I see this every couple of weeks, Macs on a Windows network.

Thank you, both, for your input! I believe you are right in suggesting downloading the file from the server and link that location. Grateful for the help, guys!
