Roles and How to Color Them was created by MotionBlur
I've tried to look and have not found.
On my system, audio drives the color of roles! If I have a B-roll clip and assigned B-roll umm.. Role and it has an audio track, I edit it in. The clip color is for the B-roll audio, but I don't always want that!
I can't change the color of the clip in the inspector or in the storyline, when there is an audio role present. I just want to know why. I'd like to say a clip is B-roll clip and color it how I want and even with audio add it in the storyline and choose or not choose using Nat sound and keep the clip colored B-roll.
I guess I could set up a Role of B-roll with Sound but C'MON!
Am I missing something, or just being picky?

The application only allows one color for a clip unless the audio is detached. The video role color will also appear if the clip has mixed audio.

Thanks Tom,
But why is audio the driving color choice? It's a video editing program.
My b-roll just contains on camera audio, but sometimes its a live band in a corp meet. I want to be able to cut in my roll without loosing colors and "turn up" the audio when and where I'd like it.
Not a thing?
You are always helpful

Roles are primarily for defining audio so a structure can be created for mixing. The whole lane structure really only benefits audio as you can;'t stack lanes in video.

A few RULES about ROLES:
Hope that helps,
Edgar Rothermich
- The color of a Clip has nothing to do with the Clip itself.
- The color that you see on a Clip is one of 12 colors that is assigned to a specific Role in the Roles Editor
- You can't assigned colors to a Subrole, they use the color of their parent Main Role
- By assigning a specific Role to a Clip (you actually assign a Subrole and not the Main Role), that Clip then uses that color.
- Therefore, if you want to change the color of a Clip, you have to assign it to the Role that has the color you like.
- Again, you don't change the color of a Clip, you change the color of a Role that is assigned to that Clip.
- If a Clip has video and audio content, then the color of the Clip is determined by the color assigned to the audio clip, the Audio Role and not the Video Role determines the Clip Color
- If you mute the audio, the Clip will change its color to the color assigned to the video portion of the Clip.
- If a Clip has multiple Audio Components that are assigned to Roles of different colors, then the Clip (in collapsed view or the video portion in expanded view) is displayed in gray regardless of any Role Color.
Hope that helps,
Edgar Rothermich

Many thanks, Edgar for sharing details about roles, assignment and color. I do share "MotionBlur's" desire to color video clips, even if it's not happening. Adobe Premiere permits color assignments to clips; it's handy for identifying content in the sequence/project quickly.

Thank you Sir,
Yes this does spell things out quite well. I have been able to implement this information and tweak my use of roles to better suite me.
